Lisa Costello: Lily's Garden, 2003-04 aluminum, plastic, artificial flowers, time-lapse video and mouse, lent by artist
"Lily's Garden a naturally occurring system that has been manipulated, controlled and scrutinized. The naturally occurring system in this case is Lily, a small white albino mouse. As an already altered and specifically bred mammal, Lily allows for an examination of the ideas being explored within the work about the natural environment, the unnatural environment, societal concepts of nature through the representation of nature via artificial means, and the tension between caretaking and control of nature within our culture. Isolated by her transparent structure and monitored through time-lapse video, Lily has proceeded to rip out the pristine plastic flowers, leaves and grass and drag them into her sleeping quarters. Her instinct to nest within the artificial garden of plastic, metal and miniature waterfall is a testament to her strength and ability to adapt in the environment that was devised to protect, nurture and confine her."
