Heidi Komao

review

Heidi Kumao:
Protest, 2004,
Aluminum, motors, microprocessor, girl's shoes, wood.
24 x 48 x 48 inches
"A machine portrait: a little girl stands under a spotlight, posed and expected to perform. Unwilling and unpredictable, she attempts to strike back at the forces that demand her acquiescence."

Resist, 2004
Aluminum, motors, girl's shoes, electronics, wood, microphone
12 x 48 x 48 inches
"A machine portrait: audio-activated 6 year-old girl's legs sit awkwardly on the floor.  By speaking to her, viewers can attempt to control or interact with her, but she responds in an unexpected voice of resistant gestures."

Both are part of a larger project titled "Misbehaving: Media Machines Acting Out."  In each tableau, a hybrid machine "being" performs: a kinetic, electronically controlled machine speaks with a visual voice of erratic physical gestures.  As a combination of performance and robotics, they represent women and girls who disobey or resist expectations."
